Conscious Capitalism – Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business

Customers and long time subscribers of our newsletter will observe we have recommended a number of high impact books to equip and guide leaders to drive change resulting in increased customer loyalty and improved operational performance for their firm.

A book we absolutely MUST add to the list is Conscious Capitalism by John Mackey and Rajendra Sisodia.

To put things into perspective, another highly recommended book on our list is Good to Great by Jim Collins. In our opinion, Conscious Capitalism transcends Good to Great!

As outlined in Conscious Capitalism:

“…companies that were held up as financial exemplars in Good to Great have only slightly outpaced the market over the past fifteen years and have performed much worse than the conscious firms studied…”

To be clear, this book is NOT about the numbers, or how to create quick-win / short-term results to make a firm’s stock price look good “this quarter.” Rather, it is about how to treat ALL stakeholders (team members, customers, suppliers, shareholders, the community and environment) for what they call a “Win6” (a win-win for all concerned)!

The concepts covered include highly effective business strategies as well as a call for personal improvement and leadership. The authors accomplish the latter by putting up a mirror for each of us, as individuals, to consider: what are we doing, why are we doing it and what is the outcome of what we are doing.

In closing, I dare you to read this book to learn how conscious companies (like Southwest Airlines, Google, Costco, UPS, POSCO, Tata, The Container Store, Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, Nordstrom, Patagonia, Trader Joe’s, Panera, and Bright Horizons) have achieved such stellar results.

Why the dare? Because this book offers approaches for which we cannot “hide behind corporate policy, procedures or the short-term numbers.” We must step out as leaders and become vulnerable.

Enjoy the read!
