Five years ago, I walked into my boss’s office and said, “I quit.”

Not because I was unhappy. But because sometimes life changes the priorities in front of you.
Both of my wife’s brothers have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and at the time, they were struggling to find the full time care they needed to survive. My wife and I made the decision to step in ourselves. We dropped everything and moved to Alaska to help.
What I thought would be a resignation became one of the most meaningful moments of my professional life. My boss refused to let me quit and instead offered me something almost unheard of at the time; fully remote work, years before the world normalized it.
However, it came with real tradeoffs. Slower career growth. Less visibility. A significant reduction in pay. Watching opportunities pass by while focusing on something far more important at home.
One of the biggest lessons I took from that experience is that both in business and in life, there will always be tradeoffs, risks, and unexpected challenges. The best leaders handle those moments with transparency, compassion, and the wisdom to recognize what truly matters.
6 years later, I would do it all over again without hesitation.
